About Me!

My name is Vivien Lane, and I am an aspiring educator. I am a first year student at ECU where I am majoring in elementary education with a gifted concentration. Outside of school, I have a passion for music and theater and have participated in band and theatrical productions since middle school.

Teaching is something I am very excited for because I enjoy making an impact on people's lives and my goal is to do that with my students. I chose this concentration because I was labeled gifted in multiple areas from 3rd to 12th grade. I know the challenges gifted children face, whether it is being burnt out, not having access to a gifted program, or simply not being challenged enough. My goal is to get my AIG certification so that I ensure my students get the assistance they need.

What is AIG?

AIG stands for Academically or Intellectually Gifted. This refers to students who are exceptional learners and have varying needs in schools. These students typically display gifted traits, such as motivation, creativity, memory, reasoning, and more. Each gifted and talented child is different, based on their area and degree of giftedness. (Breedlove, 2022)

Why is AIG important?

It is important that gifted students are challenged so they continue to stay motivated in schools. When talented children are not recognized for their gifts and are not provided with a more rigorous curriculum better suited to them, they do not perform as well in schools simply because they do not want to. Educators, parents, and the community need to support gifted students and help boost their self-efficacy by advocating for gifted programs. These programs offer a wide variety of opportunities to students that will be tremendously helpful in their futures.
